Case Study: Wireless bar coding that Elvis could sing about...

Problem:
Unique could not properly track returns from its customers. The manual system they
used was time-consuming and prone to errors. They needed to quickly process returns
and to accurately repost corrected SKU quantities back to inventory.
Solution:
Imperial used its expertise in wireless solutions to design a bar code system that used
radio frequencies to transmit information about each SKU. With this system, receiving
clerks were able to scan CDs and cassettes to verify if the merchandise was eligible to
be returned. Imperial then developed the middleware that enabled bar code scanners to
exchange information directly with the Sun Solaris server that housed the inventory data.
Result:
Unique reduced the cost of restoring returned merchandise to inventory and also achieved
more accurate inventory counts. This in turn improved customer service, since better inventory
counts meant more accurate ship dates and faster processing of credits.
